I have to thank all the friends and little people who made me feel very welcome on my return to La Nucia yesterday. I had to spend an extra night in Liverpool and I really intended to be back on Thursday. In actual fact my original idea, a bit silly, was to get to Liverpool and back in the same day. However, security checks and my sister´s bad back caused us to miss the plane. However, the little people made me feel really pleased to be back. I will explain soon who the little people are. They are not diddymen but they are in between diddymen size and my own height and they are found in La Nucia!

It was nice talking with Cathy humphreys again. Cathy is the editor of the Post and we used to chat every week on my show with OCI. Sue Reula also chatted with me about her work with her 3C Care Agency. They do a really great job and if anyone is in need of their services I can thoroughly recommend them. Iris set an awful teaser. Iris, we only had one person getting this one! Rob Daniells gave us the lowdown with La Liga.

Here´s a news item from a place not far away……

A Small plane has crashed into the sea in the area known as Coveta Fuma, Alicante. A man from the town of El Campello has died and his body has been recovered from the sea by rescue personnel, according to Marine Salvage sources.

Sources of the Provincial Fire Consortium have indicated that “he was not travelling with any other person”. Sources from the airport of El Altet have said that, according to the flight plan, the stricken plane had taken off from “somewhere in the province of Castellón” bound for Almeria.

The incident occurred between 1215 and 1230 hours when, for reasons still unknown, the plane crashed into the sea, some 75 yards offshore, according to the Provincial Fire Consortium. Two helicopter rescue team members of the Provincial Council of Alicante, one of which was winched down to the crashed plane and saw that the cabin was empty.  Subsequently, a Maritime Rescue boat was mobilized and shortly after discovered the body of the pilot, who has been transferred to land by helicopter. Municipal sources have told Efe that a local of the area saw that the engine had stalled as the plane was gliding silently and losing altitude, then ultimately crashed in a creek next to the Barranco de les Aigues.

Have you ever really wondered how much of psychology is padding? My friend, the rebel doctor, has this to say on the subject…..

The truth behind psycho-babble

If you’ve ever felt that most psychologists are just making it up as they go along, you’re not far off.

Many shrinks place little to no value on science and research, just the value of your insurance check. In return, they’ll give you whatever screwball treatment they feel like — whether it works or not.

But you don’t have to take my word for it — just take a look at the damning new report in Psychological Science in the Public Interest, the result of a major two-year analysis that lays out the ugly truth behind this shady industry.

“Many clinical psychologists today, perhaps the majority, are deeply ambivalent about the role of science in informing their practice,” the authors write.

This report wasn’t written by some unhappy fringe or radical group looking to discredit psychology. It was written by a group of top psychologists, some of the few rays of light who see the darkness engulfing their profession.

Any so-called doctor who ignores real scientific research and just goes with whatever he likes is a QUACK, plain and simple. As far as I’m concerned, it’s always hunting season for these lame ducks — but I’m going to let someone else take aim…

“The disconnect between what clinicians do and what science has discovered is an unconscionable embarrassment,” Columbia University’s Walter Mischel told Newsweek in an article on the report.

Dr. Mischel isn’t some sharp-tongued malcontent — he’s one of the leading names in his field, a man who has written some of the textbooks used in psychology courses. Mischel wrote an editorial that went along with the study, and if you take a moment to read it you’ll never look at your shrink the same way again.

That recent article in Newsweek looked at the solid research behind proven techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy for conditions such as panic disorders and depression.

Yet many psychologists prefer bizarre treatments like dolphin-assisted therapy, where the animals are supposed to help people overcome their disorders.

The great shame of it is that there are some effective psychological treatments that work far better than meds for some tough disorders.

Just don’t expect to get them from your local quack doctor.

I found this story rather interesting and I am passing it on via SpanishVida ……………………………

Torrevieja Hospital’s beaurocracy has been praised by none other than Bill Gates. Most hospitals in the world are still following the old fashioned method of huge amounts of paperwork, all stored in massive files, together with written prescriptions and diagnoses.

Torrevieja Hospital has been a forerunner in this aspect, and has been using modern technology to keep on top of the official paperwork.  The electronic filing system for medical records used here has been named as “The best in the world” by Microsoft, and has been recommended as an example to be followed by other hospitals throughout the world.   Each year the multinational company holds an event called “Saving Customers Money”. The jury is formed by Microsoft employees who vote for the candidates. The winner this year is Torrevieja Salud, which has 213,000 patients signed up, and deals with up to 600,000 patients every summer.

Luis Barcia, the hospital director, is thrilled with the accolade. He thanks Microsoft, as, without their operating systems the programme would not have been possible .   The filing system, called Florence, stands out as it is not just a data base, but permits hospital staff to interact with each record and thus ease the whole process, and foresee possible future problems.  The system begins as soon as someone is admitted into the hospital. If they are rushed to ER and wait over a certain time the doctors on duty will receive a text message automatically to make them aware of the problem. This kind of message will also be sent to doctors when their patients’ medical test results are ready.
