Caroline

I had already lost one hour when the alarm woke me up this morning. I had dutifully put the clocks one hour forward so that I wouldn’t oversleep. I let the cat in and then got in the shower. A howl of protest from the bedroom turned into a long tirade against Vodafone as Anne, my wife, complained bitterly that there had also been an automatic update which means this blog is now being prepared at 7.15 am. Such is life……snoring has now resumed so, although I had not been fully forgiven, things were returning to normal. The cat was out on his early morning round and I could get on with this blog.

It’s a very special day for many of us today. It’s the day Radio Caroline started broadcasting and radio would never be the same again. The BBC was, up til this day, dominating our taste in music and chat…….How was I to know that all these years later I would have Tony Hiller as a friend? Tony wrote the song Caroline, the station’s theme song recorded by the Fortunes.

More sleaze with the British politicians today with more ministers discredited in the lobbying scandal. At least we can all sleep early now the News of the World are backing the Tories. They were always prepared to take the moral high ground weren´t they?

(1)   Were formed on 4 May 1964, in Erdington, Birmingham , and had been members of a band called El Riot & the Rebels.

(2)   In the spring of 1964 they landed a recording contract and they released a single, “Steal Your Heart Away”, that same year which failed to chart.

(3)   They appeared on the Cult UK Series “Ready Steady Go!” singing the up-tempo ‘B’ side “Lose Your Money (But Don’t Lose your Mind)” But it was their second single, released later that year, which really launched their career, being promoted on TV with one of the first purpose-made promotional films in the pop era.

(4)   The second single became a hit in the United Kingdom (where it remains their only Number 1 single to date and in the United States where it reached #10. The band encountered management problems after the chart-topping hit and subsequently signed to Decca Records in the UK

(5)   In late 1972, a re-issue of their five-year-old  hit became their biggest U.S. hit, soaring to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming a certified million-seller; the song had “bubbled under” the Hot 100 charts on its original release . The song also returned to the UK charts, reaching #9, ten places higher than its original release in 1967.

(6)   One of this group took part in the UK tour of Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds in April 2006, and a second tour in November 2007,

Man United and Chelsea looked brilliant yesterday although I cannot understand why Berbatov and Rooney need to wear gloves.Have they got psoriasis? Is it so reporters can say they had a hand in the goals? Zola continues to show that being a good player doesn’y automatically make you a good manager and both Andy Murray and Lewis Hamilton have not done well yesterday. Never mind. There’s always the cyclists……….

3-minute therapy: You get what you pay for

We live in a society that’s so fast paced, we don’t even want to take the time to treat our ailments — especially the emotional ones. And now, believe it or not, there are psychiatrists and psychologists offering three-minute therapy sessions.

One therapist had a case that went roughly like this: the man said he had fears of losing his job because he was afraid at his age he’d never find a new one. The therapist asked him if he had outside interests. The man said he’d always wanted to write a book, to which the therapist responded, “Pursue this new venture. When you are in a situation like this, you must re-invent yourself.”

Session over.

That’s the kind of advice you’d expect from your hairdresser or a store clerk. And if that’s what you’re looking for, you may as well save your money.

Now, I was trained as a physician, not a psychiatrist. So you’ll excuse me if I look at the so-called benefits of this new method with a somewhat cynical eye. But in all my years of medical experience, I haven’t come across a whole lot that can be solved in just three minutes.

Giving you advice you can actually use,

Doctor’s Fee

When the wealthy businessman choked on a fish bone at a restaurant, he was fortunate that a doctor was seated at a nearby table.

Springing up, the doctor skillfully removed the bone and saved the man’s life.

As soon as the fellow had calmed himself and could talk again, he thanked the surgeon enthusiastically and offered to pay him for his services.

“Just name the fee,” he croaked gratefully.

“Okay,” replied the doctor. “How about half of what you’d have offered when the bone was still stuck in your throat?”
