The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.1969, The Monkees set a new record when their second album, ‘More Of The Monkees’ jumped from No.122 to the top of the US chart. The album then stayed in pole position for eighteen weeks.

It’s a bit nippy but the skies are blue and we are very lucky as it’s freezing in many parts of Europe. I bet I’m not the only one who finds it difficult to accept the theory of global warming when it’s this cold. I have seen the pictures of ice falling into the sea and I’m sure on a very hot day this will happen. Doesn’t it all freeze up again in the cold weather. Everywhere else is freezing and record low temperatures are being recorded so how come we never get the information that the ice caps have filled up again?

Even though we have a definite chill wind in the air the stalwart Brits are on the beach at Benidorm sunbathing Some have their little tents. Some have their windbreaks. Others ware walking past me without their shirts on and with their flip flops giving the sound of the soft shoe shuffle. I, in the meantime, have my woolly jumper, leather coat and scarf. In their demonic eyes I can almost see the word wimp printed as they look at me almost in disbelief. Yes, mate. I’m cold. I’m freezing cold and I’ll bet you’re from Scotland. No wonder Brave Heart had a good following. I’ve just had a good chat with Don Woods and he tells me they have been as low as -16 in parts of the UK and cars have been skidding around everywhere. I do not miss that climate one bit. I didn’t even like it when I was young. I hated playing rugby and football in extremely cold weather…..

The Day’s Events 11 February

1752 – The Pennsylvania Hospital opened as the very first hospital in America. At last

1808 – Judge Jesse Fell experimented by burning anthracite coal to keep his house warm. He successfully showed how clean the coal burned and how cheaply it could be used as a heating fuel. This proved he was being paid to much as he had money to burn

1812 – The term “gerrymandering” had its beginning when the governor ofMassachusetts, Elbridge Gerry, signed a redistricting law that favored his party. It’s never be practised since!

1858 – A French girl, Bernadette Soubirous, claimed to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary near Lourdes. It’s part of my faith and we need something to believe in.

1878 – The first U.S. bicycle club, Boston Bicycle Club, was formed.

1929 – The Lateran Treaty was signed. Italy now recognized the independence and sovereignty of Vatican City. Good

1958 – Ruth Carol Taylor was the first black woman to become a stewardess by making her initial flight. How could anyone have had a problem with this?

1968 – The new 20,000 seat Madison Square Garden officially opened in New York. This was the fourth Garden. It was being prepared for Michael Jackson concerts

1975 – Margaret Thatcher became the first woman to head a major party in Britain when she was elected leader of the Conservative Party. She was the best man for the job

1979 – Nine days after the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned to Iran (after 15 years in exile) power was seized by his followers. You could see that one coming

1982 – France nationalized five groups of major industries and 39 banks. Personally, I think this is shown in the patriotism of many French people

1984 – The tenth Space Shuttle mission returned to Earth safely. Good

1989 – Rev. Barbara C. Harris became the first woman to be consecrated as a bishop in the Episcopal Church. I can accept this

1990 – Nelson Mandela was freed after 27 years in captivity. Brilliant news

1990 – In Tokyo, Japan, James “Buster” Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson in the tenth round to win the heavyweight championship. Strange business Boxing

1993 – Janet Reno was appointed to the position of attorney general by U.S. President Clinton. She was the first female to hold the position. Well done

2000 – The space shuttle Endeavor took off. The mission was to gather information for the most detailed map of the earth ever made.

2000 – Great Britain suspended self-rule in Northern Ireland after the Irish Republican Army (IRA) failed to begin decommissioning (disarming) by a February deadline. Bad news

2006 – In Texas, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a campanion during a quail hunt. This inspires confidence!

The Day’s Music Events 11 February

1956, Elvis Presley appeared on American TV’s ‘Stage Show’ and performed ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ and ‘Blue Suede Shoes.’ Brilliant

1958, English singer Michael Holliday was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘The Story Of My Life.’ The song gave writers Bacharach and David their first UK No.1 hit.Needless to say he was a Liverpudlian

1963, In less than ten hours, The Beatles record ten new songs for their first album plus four other tracks which would be the next two singles. John Lennon’s vocal on The Isley Brothers ‘Twist & Shout’ was recorded in one take to complete the album. I think the Beatles version is very different to the Isleys and I like both
1964, The Beatles made their live concert debut in the US at the Washington Coliseum. Over 350 police surrounded the stage to keep the 8,000 plus screaming fans in control. These were exciting and noisy times
1969, The Monkees set a new record when their second album, ‘More Of The Monkees’ jumped from No.122 to the top of the US chart. The album then stayed in pole position for eighteen weeks. I’m tempted to say it was clever marketing

1973, a local charity raised over £500 ($850) selling bedsheets and pillowcases used by the Rolling Stones after a show at Western Springs Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand.Strangely enough it would appear to be totally the revers of how the Stones first hit the headlines in the UK
1978, The Brotherhood Of Man were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Figaro’, the group’s third and last UK No.1. A great song written by my good friend Tony Hiller

1985, The Police won Outstanding Contribution to British music at the fourth annual Brit Awards held in London. Other winners included Prince for best International Act and Best Soundtrack for Purple Rain, British Single was Frankie Goes To Hollywood ‘Relax’, British Video was Duran Duran for ‘Wild Boys’, British Comedy Recording Neil ‘Hole In My Shoe’, British Album went to Sade for ‘Diamond Life’, British Male Solo Artist was won by Paul Young, British Female Solo Artist, Alison Moyet and Best British Group went to Wham! I agreed with most of this although I’m not so sure about Wham
1987, The Smiths were at No.1 in the UK indie charts with ‘Shoplifters Of The World Unite.’ Anyone else interested in subliminal messages?
1992, Motley Crue fired their singer Vince Neil when he turned up for rehearsals, claiming that he had lost his passion for the band and was now more involved with racing cars. Who could blame them?
1998, the hand-written lyrics to ‘Candle in the Wind’ by Bernie Taupin were auctioned off at Christie’s in LA for £278,512. Brilliant

The company were suing the Spice Girls for £1.6 million ($2.72 million) over lost advertising as sponsors for the 1998 Spiceworld World tour. I’ll tell you what I want what I really really want…

‘ 2003, the British Phonographic Industry reported its biggest sales decline in decades, with the biggest slump in a single year since the birth of the CD market in the early 1980s. Piracy, illegal duplication and distribution by international criminals of CD’s were all blamed for the decrease. With the Internet growing ever stronger this was hardly surprising

2006, Il Divo went to No.1 on the US album chart with their second album ’Ancora.’Wonderful singing

2007, Mika went to No.1 on the UK album chart with his debut album ‘Life In Cartoon Motion.’This guy is very talented
2008, Heather Mills and Sir Paul McCartney appeared at the High Court in London for a hearing to reach a financial settlement for their divorce. The hearing in the Family Division, which was taking place in private, was expected to last five days. The couple, who had a four-year-old daughter, Beatrice, announced the end of their four-year marriage in 2006. There had been speculation among divorce experts, based on recent cases, that the settlement could reach £60m. This really was a shame to see their dirty washing being laundered in public

2009, Ronettes singer Estelle Bennett died at her home in Englewood, N.J. She was 67. The 60′s girl group best known for their work with producer Phil Spector had the 1963 hit ‘Be My Baby’ which epitomized the famed “wall of sound” technique.Sad times

Birthday Boys and Girls

1935, Gene Vincent, (born Eugene Craddock), US rock ‘n’ roll singer with His Blue Caps who had a 1956 US No.7 & UK No.16 single with ‘Be Bop A Lula’. He died on October 12th 1971.

1940, Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett, (1962 US No.1 & 1973 UK No.3 single ‘The Monster Mash’). The song was a spoof on the dance crazes popular at the time, including the Twist and the Mashed Potato. Pickett died of leukemia at the age of 69 on April 25th 2007.
1941, Sergio Mendes, Brazilian singer, (1983 US No.4 & UK No.45 single ‘Never Got Let You Go’).

1946,Ray Lake, The Real Thing, (1976 UK No.1 single ‘You To Me Are Everything’).
1963, Sheryl Crow, US singer, songwriter, (1994 US No.2 & UK No.4 single ‘All I Wanna Do’, 1993 album ‘Tuesday Night Music Club’). Worked as a backing singer on the Michael Jackson ‘Bad’ tour.

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 2004, Diana Ross was sentenced to two days in jail after pleading ‘no contest’ to a drink driving charge. Ross was arrested in December 2002 after tests indicated she was twice over the drink- drive limit.

It’s sharp and a bit nippy in the shade but we are very lucky because we have a clear blue sky and sunshine. Elsewhere the picture is certainly not the same. Britain has anything up to -10º and Spain has some very cold places as we are quite a land mass on the Iberian Peninsular.

Britain’s economy has been sidelined for the moment as there are far more pressing problems like the England football team. The FA have undermined their manager and made his job situation very difficult. It is almost impossible to impose discipline in a team when you have been undermined as a manager. Whether or not John Terry is actually guilty of racial abuse is no laughing matter and nor is the danger of condemning a man before he is found guilty. This is yet another example of the arrogance and inadequacy of English national football management. If I were Harry Redknapp I would not touch the job with a barge poll. The only successful outcome would be to emulate the feat of Spain and become the World Champions. I cannot see enough quality in the national scene to achieve this.

It’s Sir Berks’ birthday over in California and we all send our love. Berks is an example to all. At the age of 86 he can still put on a fantastic Vaudeville show and all this with two replacement knees. He might drive up to 100 miles to do the show and he loads his equipment in and out of the car into the bargain. He is aided and abetted by his fabulous wife, Arlene, who is as solid as a rock in helping him put on the show as his technical assistant and DJ. They defy the laws of aging. Good luck to both of you and keep up your inspirational work.

A new court ruling could see the introduction of a ‘fat tax’ for obese air passengers in Britain.

Two disabled passengers just lost their cases – Christopher Stott v Thomas Cook and Tony Hook v British Airways – after the wheelchair users sued when they were not able to sit next to their carers on board a flight, resulting in ‘embarrassing’ incidents. Source

Fairytale...

Once upon a time there lived a king. The king had a beautiful daughter, the PRINCESS.But there was a problem. Everything the princess touched would melt.No matter what;metal, wood, stone, anything she touched would melt.Because of this, men were afraid of her. Nobody would dare marry her.The king despaired. What could he do to help his daughter? He consulted his wizards and magicians. One wizard told the king,’If your daughter touches one thing that does not melt in her hands, she will be cured.’
The king was overjoyed and came up with a plan. The next day, he held a competition. Any man that could bring his daughter an object that would not melt would marry her and inherit the king’s wealth.THREE YOUNG PRINCES TOOK UP THE CHALLENGE.The first brought a sword of the finest steel.
But alas, when the princess touched it, it melted. The prince went away sadly.
The second prince brought diamonds.
He thought diamonds are the hardest substance in the world and would not melt. But alas, once the princess touched them, they melted. He too was sent away disappointed.
The third prince approached. He told the princess,’Put your hand in my pocket and feel what is in there.’The princess did as she was told, though she turned red.
She felt something hard. She held it in her hand. And it did not melt!!!The king was overjoyed. Everybody in the kingdom was overjoyed.!And the third prince married the princess and they both lived happily ever after.Question: What was in the prince’s pants?M&M’s of course. They melt in your mouth, not in your hand.

—————————————————————-

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. In 1985, Elaine Page and Barbara Dickson were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘I Know Him So Well.’ The song was taken from the musical Chess, written by Tim Rice and Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson from Abba. It gave Benny and Bjorn their 10th No.1 as writers

The weather in Europe is awful. The weather in Spain is bad but here we are in Benidorm with beautiful sunshine and clear blue sky. I know we are very lucky.

I was never a fan of Sven nor was I a fan of the appointment of Capello. I am amazed that so many in the media seem unable to realise that Capello is quite right to say the FA have been wrong to take away the captaincy from Terry. Please don’t think for a minute that I am suddenly becoming a Terry fan as the whole affair has been badly handled. No man is guilty until it has been proven that he is guilty. I think the FA had the right to consult their manager and ask him to suspend the captain with the explanation to the public that it is in the better interests of the England FA to distance themselves from what Terry might have done. However, even if this had been done it might well have been perceived to be their judgement on the affair. Nobody is coming out of this looking competent. I will also add that I am delighted Harry Redknapp was cleared and he would be the best man for the job. However, I feel he owed loyalty to Spurs for standing by their man and giving him time to defend himself. Don’t be surprised if Mouriño becomes an outside choice! There’s also Rafa Benitez without a job. At least they both speak English.

A cat died and went to Heaven. God met her at the gates and said,’You have been a good cat all these years.Anything you want is yours for the asking.’ The cat thought for a minute and then said ‘All my life I lived on a farm and slept on hard wooden floors. I would like a real fluffy pillow to sleep on.’ God said, ‘Say no more.’ Instantly the cat had a huge fluffy pillow.A few days later, six mice were killed in an accident and they all went to Heaven together. God met the mice at the gates with the same offer that He made to the cat. The mice said, ‘Well, we have had to run all of our lives: from cats, dogs, and even people with brooms! If we could just have some little roller skates, we would not have to run again.’ God answered, ‘It is done.’ All the mice had beautiful roller skates.
About a week later, God decided to check on the cat. He found her sound asleep on her fluffy pillow.. God gently awakened the cat and asked, ‘Is everything okay? How have you been doing? Are you happy?’
The cat replied, ‘Oh, it is WONDERFUL. I have never been so happy in my life. The pillow is so fluffy, and those little Meals on Wheels you have been sending over are delicious!’

—————————————————————

Coming back from another recent EC summit in Rome, various European leaders were forced to take the train due to a strike by Swiss ATC controllers; sitting together in the same compartment, travelling through the Swiss Alps, were Sarkozy, Cameron, Merkel and the young and very attractive female Irish foreign minister. The train goes into a dark tunnel and a few seconds later there is the sound of a loud slap. When the train emerges from the tunnel, Sarkozy has a bright red, hand print on his cheek. No one speaks, everyone is extremely shocked and embarrassed.
Angela Merkel thinks: Sarkozy, not able to help himself, must have groped the Irish girl in the dark, and she slapped his cheek.
The Irish girl thinks: Sarkozy, not able to help himself, must have tried to grope me in the dark, but missed and fondled Merkel and she slapped his cheek.
Sarkozy thinks: Why me? That perfidious Cameron must have groped the Irish girl in the dark knowing that I’d get the blame for it and she slapped me… the English bastard.
And Cameron thinks: I can’t wait for another tunnel, so I can smack that little French shit again.

Would You marry Again?
A husband and wife are sitting quietly in bed reading when the wife looks over at him and asks the question….
WIFE: “What would you do if I died? Would you get married Again?”
HUSBAND: “Definitely not!”
WIFE: “Why not? Don’t you like being married?”
HUSBAND: “Of course I do..”
WIFE: “Then why wouldn’t you remarry? ”
HUSBAND: “Okay, okay, I’d get married again.”
WIFE: “You would?” (with a hurt look)
HUSBAND: (makes audible groan)
WIFE: “Would you live in our house?”
HUSBAND: “Sure, it’s a great house.”
WIFE: “Would you sleep with her in our bed?”
HUSBAND: “Where else would we sleep?”
WIFE: “Would you let her drive my car?”
HUSBAND: “Probably, it is almost new.”
WIFE: “Would you replace my pictures with hers?”
HUSBAND: “That would seem like the proper thing to do.”
WIFE: “Would you give her my jewelry?”
HUSBAND: “No, I’m sure she’d want her own.”
WIFE: “Would you take her golfing with you?
HUSBAND: “Yes, those are always good times.”
WIFE: “Would she use my clubs?
HUSBAND: “No, she’s left-handed.”
WIFE: — silence –
HUSBAND: “shit.”

The Day’s Music Events 9 February

1963, Paul and Paula US No.1 with ‘Hey Paula’, – No.8 in the UK. We never really knew them

1964, The Beatles made their US live debut on CBS-TV’s ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’;- watched by an estimated 73 million people. The show had received over 50,000 applications for the 728 seats in the TV studio. I think they were quite popular
1967, Canadian conductor Percy Faith died aged 67. 1960 US No.1 ‘Theme From A Summer Place’, nine weeks at No.1, which won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1961.This was a great instrumental

1967, the film for the latest Beatles single ‘Penny Lane’ and ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ was shown on BBC-TV’s Top Of The Pops. It was the first Beatles single not to make No.1 in the UK since 1963, held off the top by Engelbert Humperdinck’s ‘Release Me.’ He was a bit special and this was a great song
1972, Paul McCartney’s Wings played the first night of a UK College tour in Nottingham. The group arrived unannounced asking social secretaries if they would like them to perform that evening. The band’s intended first stop on the tour, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, refused to allow them to play so they drove on to Nottingham. Admission was 40p, British pub rock band Brinsley Schwarz was the opening act for the tour. This was innovative to say the least
1974, The Love Unlimited Orchestra went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Love’s Theme’, it made No.10 in the UK.If my memory serves me well they were Barry White’s backing band.

1981, American singer Bill Haley was found dead, fully clothed on his bed at his home in Harlington, Texas from a heart attack, Haley had sold over 60 million records during his career. 1955 UK & US No.1 single ‘Rock Around The Clock’, and became known as the first Rock ‘n’ Roll star. Haley was blinded in his left eye as a child due to a botched operation and later adopted his distinctive spit-curl hairstyle to distract attention from his blind eye.He had some very unusual rock n roll on his albums
1982, George Harrison presented UNICEF with a cheque for $9 million (£5.3 million), ten years after the fundraising concert for Bangladesh. This fantastic work by George Harrison is often overlooked
1985, Elaine Page and Barbara Dickson were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘I Know Him So Well.’ The song was taken from the musical Chess, written by Tim Rice and Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson from Abba. It gave Benny and Bjorn their 10th No.1 as writers. This illustrates the quality of these songwriters. It was a great song but the singers did a great job

1985, Madonna No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Like A Virgin’, a No.3 hit in the UK and very big in the discos
1993, British broadcaster Bill Grundy died of a heart attack aged 69. He conducted the famous Sex Pistols interview on Thames Television on December 1, 1976; when Grundy provoked the band into using obscenities on live TV. The broadcast wrecked Grundy’s television career. He was also the first television presenter to present The Beatles on Granada Television on October 17, 1962.It was a bit silly to invite yobbos onto a TV set, incite them and then look shocked when they came out with their expletives….

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.

1964, On their first full day in New York, The Beatles (minus George who had a sore throat), went for a photo-opportunity walk around Central Park. Extra police were called in to keep fans away. Later in the day The Ronettes interviewed the band for radio.

I was fascinated by an item on the BBC this morning. A young lady works as a truck driver and there is a very small percentage of lady truckers in the UK. I think they said it was 2%. This young lady had trained to become a ballet dancer and things went wrong. Her mother, another very unusual case, was a lady truck driver and also a driver trainer. She encouraged her daughter to go into the business of truck driving. The mother told us a funny story about a large trucker she was training to reverse the huge truck into a parking space. The driver was finding things a bit difficult and asker her, as his trainer, whether she knew how to do it and could she do it!

Our weather is beautiful today with wall to wall sunshine and around 10 degrees. Elsewhere around the Iberian Peninsula things are not so good as another icy blast descends from the east. We always get a few icy blasts around this time of the year. It kills the bugs but is a shock to the system. I think I will also blame it on any typing errors as my fingers won’t do as they’re told this morning!

Three-times Tour de France champion Alberto Contador, pictured leaving his Pinto (Madrid) home on Monday, has been banned from racing for two years and stripped of his most recent title after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) found him guilty of a doping offense at the 2010 event. Contador’s ban is effective from August 5, 2010, when he was provisionally suspended after being informed of the positive test, leaving him free to return to competition on August 5, 2012.

————————————–

Mexican Oysters
A Texan stopped at a local restaurant following a day roaming around in Mexico.
While sipping his tequila, he noticed a sizzling, scrumptious looking platter being served at the next table. Not only did it look good, the smell was wonderful.
He asked the waiter, ‘What is that you just served?’
The waiter replied, ‘Ah senor, you have excellent taste! Those are called Cojones de Toro, bull’s testicles from the bull fight this morning. A delicacy!’
The cowboy said, ‘What the heck, bring me an order.’
The waiter replied, ‘I am so sorry senor. There is only one serving per day because there is only one bull fight each morning. If you come early and place your order, we will be sure to save you this delicacy.’
The next morning, the cowboy returned, placed his order, and that evening was served the one and only special delicacy of the day. After a few bites, inspecting his platter, he called to the waiter and said, ‘These are delicious, but they are much, much smaller than the ones I saw you serve yesterday.’
The waiter shrugged his shoulders and replied, ‘Si, Senor. Sometimes the bull wins’

——————————————————

BRIAN O’SULLIVAN A man walked out to the street and caught a taxi just going by. He got into the taxi, and the cabbie said, “Perfect timing. You’re just like Brian” Passenger: “Who?” Cabbie: “Brian Sullivan. He’s a guy who did everything right all the time. Like my coming along when you needed a cab, things happen like that to Brian Sullivan, every single time.” Passenger: “There are always a few clouds over everybody.” Cabbie: “Not Brian Sullivan. He was a terrific athlete. He could have won the Grand Slam at tennis. He could golf with the pros. He sang like an opera baritone and danced like a Broadway star and you should have heard him play the piano. He was an amazing guy.” Passenger: “Sounds like he was something really special.” Cabbie: “There’s more. He had a memory like a computer. He remembered everybody’s birthday. He knew all about wine, which foods to order and which fork to eat them with. He could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole street blacks out. But Brian Sullivan, he could do everything right.” Passenger: “Wow. Some guy then.” Cabbie: “He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic and avoid traffic jams. Not like me, I always seem to get stuck in them. But Brian, he never made a mistake, and he really knew how to treat a woman and make her feel good. He would never answer her back even if she was in the wrong; and his clothing was always immaculate, shoes highly polished too. He was the perfect man! He never made a mistake. No one could ever measure up to Brian Sullivan.” Passenger: “An amazing fellow. How did you meet him?” Cabbie: “Well, I never actually met Brian. He died. I’m married to his F****ing’ widow.”

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.1981, John Lennon was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Woman’, an ode to his wife Yoko Ono. It was Lennon’s third No.1 in seven weeks after his death on December 8, 1980

I don’t like this time of the year. It is always seemingly full of gloom and doom. The weather is too cold for my liking and as it upsets travel more people get fed up. At least down here in the South East of Spain there is a bit more sunshine generally that can combat SAD. Those who do not suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder will not relate to what I am saying. There is a tendency to feel down if not depressed and it is now taken seriously by the medical profession. It wasn’t that long ago that this was not the case and people were told to snap out of it and make yourself feel better. There are things you can do to help yourself. You can try and go out for a walk and get some fresh air. However, this is not possible for everyone. If you feel trapped in your living conditions then try and get as near to fresh air and sunlight as possible. If you are only able to watch TV then be selective about what you watch. The news is generally depressing and there is enough violence in many of the programmes to last you a lifetime. What else can you do? Make a nice phone call and try to find a cheerful voice to have a positive chat. Try to avoid anything negative. Another thing you can do is read a nice book or magazine or listen to music that cheers you up. You can also try and wear bright clothes. In a general side….always look on the bright side of life and remember…..you’ll not be the only one feeling bad.

The Pound has just hit a 16 month low against the Euro, encouraging UK property investors to develop more interest in the strengthening Spanish property market.

GBP/EUR currently stands at around 1.2000, a growth of more than 10% over recent months. The result is that a property in Spain which may have been on the market for GBP 200.000,00 just 8 months ago is now effectively GBP 20.000,00 cheaper!

There are a number of reasons for the weakening Euro, not least the general concern about the debt which is currently being carried by countries which use the Euro as their primary currency. There is some worry that countries such as Greece, Ireland, and Italy will be able to repay their debt which is spurring investors to move their assets out of the Eurozone and, which, in turn is causing a devaluation in the Euro.

Governments from within the Eurozone are trying to find solutions to the debt crisis. If they are successful, it is likely that the Euro will strengthen again against Sterling, especially given the fact that it looks like the UK may be heading for another period of slow economic activity.

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 1965, The Righteous Brothers started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with the Phil Spector produced ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.
Everywhere you look this morning you find people struggling against the white stuff. I mean the snow. This is no laughing matter as people are dying with the cold. The management of Heathrow has been criticized for cancelling planes too early but I would suggest they have learnt from last year’s debacle. Personally, I think it is better to know in advance that the plane has been cancelled rather than travel to the airport and be disappointed and inconvenienced.

Here, the weather is relatively clement although in the north and east of Spain there are areas where the snow has hit hard. The roads are as bad as in England and people are greatly inconvenienced.

You know it’s difficult to really speak correctly when your rage is near boiling point……Here is someone who has got to that stage and put is down on paper. I’ve read it before but it’s still funny…Please excuse the language in the letter but it is truly in context..

This, apparently is an actual letter received by the UK PassportOffice.

Dear Sirs,
I’m in the process of renewing my passport, and still cannot believethis. How is it that Sky Television has my address and telephone number andknows that I bought a bleeding satellite dish from them back in 1977, and yet, the Government is still asking me where I was bloody born and on whatdate.

For Christ sakes, do you guys do this by hand? My birth date you have on my pension book, and it is on all the income tax forms I’ve filed for the past 30 years. It is on my National Health card, my driving license,my car insurance, on the last eight damn passports I’ve had,on all those stupid customs declaration forms I’ve had to fill outbefore being allowed off the plane over the last 30 years, and all thoseinsufferable census forms.
Would somebody please take note, once and for all, that my mother’sname is Mary Anne, my father’s name is Robert and I’d be abso-xxxxing-lutelyastounded if that ever changed between now and when I die!!!!!!

I apologise, I’m really pissed off this morning. Between you an’ me,I’ve had enough of this bullshit! You send the application to my house, then you ask me for my x xxxing address!!!!

What is going on? Do you have a gang of Neanderthal arseholesworkin’ there? Look at my damn picture. Do I look like Bin Laden? I don’twant to dig up Yasser Arafat, for shit sakes. I just want to go and park myarse on some sandy beach somewhere. And would someone please tell me, why would you give a shit whether I plan on visiting a farm in the next 15 days? If I ever got the urge to do something weird to a chicken or a goat, believe you me, you’d be the last xxxxing people I’d want to tell!

Well, I have to go now, ’cause I have to go to the other end of thepoxy city to get another xxxxing copy of my birth certificate, to the tuneof £30. Would it be so complicated to have all the services in the same spotto assist in the issuance of a new passport the same day??Nooooooooooooo, that’d be too damn easy and maybe make sense. You’drather have us running all over the fuckin’ place like chickens with ourheads cut off, then have to find some arsehole to confirm that it’s reallyme on the damn picture – you know, the one where we’re not allowed tosmile?! (bureaucratic xxxxin’ morons) Hey, do you know why we couldn’t smileif we wanted to? Because we’re totally pissed off!
Signed
An Irate Citizen.

P.S. Remember what I said above about the picture and gettingsomeone to confirm that it’s me? Well, my family has been in this countrysince 1776 ………. I have served in the military for something over 30years and have had full security clearances over 25 of those years enablingme to undertake highly secretive missions all over the world………. However, I have to get someone ‘important’ to verify who Iam- you know, someone like my doctor – WHO WAS BORN AND RAISED IN PAKISTAN !

———————————————————————————

Please take a minute or two to watch this video of a lesser known part of the 9/11 attacks in America. This shows something I had not seen and just shows how many wonderful people exist in this world. This is almost the American equivalent of the D-Day landings in Europe and I wonder why we haven’t seen this video before. These guys were heroes. Here’s the video.

1952 – Britain’s King George VI died. His daughter, Elizabeth II, succeeded him. Sorry butI don’t believe in such succession ….nothing to do with gender but just ask why does it happen and is it fair?

1985 – The French mineral water company, Perrier, debuted its first new product in 123 years. The new items were water with a twist of lemon, lime or orange. I’ve read a lot about water….kidology is involved

The Day’s Music Events 6 February

1958, George Harrison joined Liverpool group The Quarrymen. The group who were named after Lennon’s school featured John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Len Garry, Eric Griffiths and John Lowe. This was not the Beatles but the embryo of the group
[more]

1965, The Righteous Brothers started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with the Phil Spector produced ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’. The song was also No.1 in the UK for the duo who were not related in any way. It didn’t make any odds to anyone.

1965, The Rolling Stones second album ‘Rolling Stones No.2′ started a three-week run at No.1 on the UK charts. Sorry but I’m Stones fan

1981, Composer Hugo Montenegro died in California. Had the 1968 UK No.1 & US No.2 single ‘The Good The Bad And The Ugly’ from the soundtrack to the Clint Eastwood spaghetti western film. Worked for RCA records, producing a series of albums and soundtracks and television themes, including two volumes of Music From The Man From U.N.C.L.E. I loved the single and the Man from Uncle was one of those series with very 70s sounding music
1982, Kraftwerk were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘The Model / Computer Love’, the first German act to score a UK No.1 single. A great track and I bought the 12″ version
1982, The J Geils Band started a six week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Centrefold’, the bands only US No.1. A No.3 hit in the UK. Another brilliant track by a successful group with an album which I didn’t listen to.
1982, Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downey was hospitalised after being attacked after a gig in Belfast. Bad news

1986, Undertones singer Feargal Sharkey’s mother and sister were held at gunpoint by terrorists in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.Terrifying

1988, Tiffany started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Could’ve Been’, a No.4 hit in the UK. Tiffany had recorded the song 5 years ago when she was 13. Sorry but this was just too predictable

1990, over 200 women filed court actions against Chuck Berry after it was alleged that he had been secretly filming them in the toilets of the restaurant he owned. This was an absolutely weird event

1998, American singer and guitarist Carl Wilson from The Beach Boys died aged 51 after a long battle with lung cancer. He sang lead vocal on ‘God Only Knows’, ‘Good Vibrations,’ and ‘I Can Hear Music.’ Wilson sang backing vocals on Elton John’s ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me.’ I loved the Beach Boys and they wouldn’t have been the same group without him

1998, Austrian singer Falco (Johann Holzel) was killed in a road accident after his car collided with a bus. He scored the 1986 UK & US No.1 single ‘Rock Me Amadeus’ making him the first-ever Austrian act to score a UK and US No.1 hit single. I’d forgotten about this tragic happening.

2001, Guitarist Don Felder was fired from The Eagles. He would later launch a $50 million law suit against drummer Don Henley and guitarist Glen Frey, alleging wrongful termination and breach of implied-in-fact contract. Henley and Frey then countersued Felder for breach of contract, alleging that Felder had written and attempted to sell the rights to a “tell-all” book. Both parties settled out-of-court for an undisclosed amount.

2005, Eminem was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Like Toy Soldiers’, the rappers 6th No.1, taken from the album Encore. The track featured samples from ‘Toy Soldiers’ by Martika and ’50 Ways to Leave Your Lover’ by Paul Simon. It’s ingenious at times but sometimes difficult to understand how the original talent gets changed
2007, An exhibition of Kylie Minogue’s stage costumes, awards and accessories was launched in central London. The display at the Victoria and Albert Museum showed her changing image from 1987 onwards, from the dungarees she wore as Charlene in the Australian soap Neighbours and the gold hot pants she wore in her Spinning Around video.I have to admit that I have been a fan of her music but some of her stuff lately has become very mundane.

2008, a Los Angeles judge issued a restraining order against Britney Spears’ manager, after her mother made the request to the court. I found this all too weird

It’s a lot brighter today and, although you must keep on the move, I think it is a little warmer. Judging by what I saw on the Spanish TV this morning, I would say we are very fortunate. I’ve just walked along the seafront at Levante, Benidorm and it is really nice. I don’t know whether it’s my imagination but there seemed to be a huge amount of walking sticks about! It does tend to make you feel really thankful for what you’ve got but it is a sad fact of life that the walking wounded seem to come to Benidorm in February. They all seemed happy and there was a quietness about the place as people took their constitutional early in the morning. Here are some signs I’ve been sent…..

Sign over a Gynecologist’s Office: ”Dr. Jones, at your cervix.

In a Podiatrist’s office: ”Time wounds all heels

.At a Car Dealership: ”The best way to get back on your feet – miss a car payment.”

On a Plumber’s truck: ”We repair what your husband fixed.

On another Plumber’s truck: ”Don’t sleep with a drip. Call your plumber.

On a Church’s Bill board: ”7 days without God makes one weak.”

At a Tyre Store ”Invite us to your next blowout.”

On an Electrician’s truck: ”Let us remove your shorts.

In a Non-smoking Area: ”If we see smoke, we will assume you are on fire and take appropriate action.”

On a Maternity Room door: ”Push. Push. Push.

At an Optometrist’s Office: ”If you don’t see what you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place.”

On a Taxidermist’s window: ”We really know our stuff

.On a Fence: ”Salesmen welcome! Dog food is expensive!

Outside a Car Exhaust Store: ”No appointment necessary. We hear you coming

In a Vets waiting room: ”Be back in 5 minutes. Sit! Stay!”

In a Restaurant window: ”Don’t stand there and be hungry; come on in and get fed up.

In the front yard of a Funeral Home: ”Drive carefully. We’ll wait.

RADIATOR SHOP: ”Best place in town to take a leak.”

An old guy was in Morrisons the other day, pushing his cart around, when he collided with a young guy also pushing his cart.

He said to the young guy, “Sorry about that. I’m looking for my wife and I guess I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going..”
The young guy says, “That’s OK. It’s just a coincidence. I’m looking for my wife, too. I can’t find her and I’m getting a little desperate.
The old guy said, “Well, maybe we can help each other. What does your wife look like?”
The young guy says, “Well, she is 24 years old, tall, with blond hair, green eyes, long legs, big boobs and she’s wearing tight white shorts, a halter top and no bra. What does your wife look like?”

The old guy said, “Doesn’t matter. Let’s look for yours.”

HEALTH MINISTER VISITS CALPE

A meeting with the Minister of Health, Luis Rosado, and the mayor of Calpe, César Sánchez, was scheduled to take place on Saturday morning to discuss the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak that has killed three British pensioners and left another 15 being treated in a hospital in Benidorm.

A UK based holiday company, that specialises in holidays for mature guests, said that those who had died had been staying at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe.

The department of health confirmed on Friday that the number of people suffering from symptoms of pneumonia related to the outbreak had risen to fifteen.

LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY REDUCED

Members of a young socialist group of Almoradí have criticized the town council for poor management of facilities in the library.

The group states that their bank of eight computers was reduced to just one, the WiFi connection doesn´t work and the printing and scanning facilities are so poor they are unusable.

In addition to providing the full function of the facilities, the group also want opening hours to be extended to allow them to study for exams.

BURGLARY SUSPECT ARRESTED

Local Police officers in Alicante have arrested a 32 year old man on suspicion of a burglary, after he was found inside a store, wearing a backpack in which he was carrying hammers, files, screwdrivers, gloves and a hat, as well as damaged locks which officers believed were from the doors to the building he was in.

The store owner alerted the police, who were quick to attend the scene, catching the suspect inside. He tried to flee but was apprehended and taken into custody in Alicante.

SANTA POLA CAMPER VAN CLAMP DOWN

The town council of Santa Pola has announced a crack down on camper vans and caravans that many feel are an eyesore on the environment when they congregate in areas which are not designated camp sites.

All political groups agreed unanimously on the notion that will see fines of between 100 and 1,500 euro for vehicles which are parked in places for longer periods of times than the acceptable length of time. In most places, the maximum allowed time for any vehicle to park is 48 hours. Vehicles will have to leave the area completely after this time or will be in violation of the law.

LONG LIVE LOVE

In addition to providing a big screen display for messages of love, the city council of Torrevieja has announced a unique element to their build up to the celebrations of St Valentine´s day, by offering a prize to the oldest married couple resident in the city.

In order to submit an application to win the couple must be registered residents of the city and be able to provide photocopies of their family and marriage documents. The winners will then be celebrated at a gala dinner on the evening of February 14th at the CMO centre for residents of the third age.

Disney movies, music and books. Great childhood memories for most of us

The Day’s Music Events 5 February

1957, 5,000 fans greeted Bill Haley when he arrived from New York on the liner Queen Elizabeth at Southampton, for his debut UK concert tour. Haley was the first American rock artist to tour the UK. Not a bad crowwd for a first visit
1962, The Beatles played two shows, one at the Cavern Club at lunchtime and in the evening at the Kingsway Club in Southport. This was the first time Ringo Starr appeared live with the group after drummer Pete Best became ill. I wonder whether Pete Best had an inkling of what was to come?
1966, Petula Clark had her second No.1 in the US singles chart with ‘My Love’, (it made No. 4 in the UK). I don’t really know this song
1967, The Beatles filmed part of the promo clip for ‘Penny Lane’ around the Royal Theatre, Stratford, London and walking up and down Angel Lane. Why on earth did they not film in Penny Lane itself?
1967, The News Of The World reported that Mick Jagger had taken LSD at the Moody Blues’ home in the UK. Jagger sued the paper for libel in an on-going feud between the News Of The World and The Stones.
1969, The Move were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Blackberry Way’, the group’s only UK No.1. They did quite well with Flower’s in the rain and Fire Brigade
1970, David Bowie recorded four songs at the BBC Paris Cinema, London, for the John Peel Sunday Concert radio show. This was guitarists Mick Ronson’s first appearance with Bowie. All good memories
1972, T Rex were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Telegram Sam’, the group’s third UK No.1 and taken from their album The Slider. I remember it well
1976, American saxophonist Rudy Pompilli died of lung cancer aged 52. Although not a smoker himself, it is believed he contracted the disease through second hand smoke. With Bill Haley and his Comets, he had the 1955 UK & US No.1 single with ‘Rock Around The Clock’, Pompilli released one solo album, Rudy’s Rock: The Sax That Changed the World. It’s another sad pop memory. I saw him but never knew his name
1977, Mary MacGregor started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Torn Between Two Lovers’, it made No.4 in the UK. Nice cute song
1983, Toto went to No.1 on the US singles with ‘Africa’; a No.3 hit in the UK. Another favourite of mine

2000, American singer Doris Coley from The Shirelles died of breast cancer aged 58. This is really sad

2004, Janet Jackson’s right breast became the most searched-for image in net history, Jackson’s breast was seen by millions on TV after Justin Timberlake pulled at her bodice during a duet. This was, of course, a complete accident
2006, The Rolling Stones played three songs during the half-time show of The Super Bowl in Detroit. After the event, the Stones expressed their displeasure over having Mick Jagger’s microphone turned down during the song “Start Me Up”. The money would have been quite good
2007, producer Phil Spector won $900,000 (£459,000) after settling an embezzlement claim. Spector said former assistant Michelle Blaine removed $425,000 (£216,000) from his pension and did not repay a $635,000 (£324,000) loan. Ms Blaine claimed the loan was a gift, and the pension funds were for a film aimed at improving Spector’s image. As part of the settlement, she dropped a counter-claim of sexual harassment.
What a bizarre series of events
2008, Amy Winehouse was questioned by police in connection with a video apparently showing her smoking a crack-cocaine pipe. I love her voice …..otherwise…

Birthday Boys and Girls

1935, Alex Harvey, vocals, guitar, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, (1975 UK No.7 single ‘Delilah, 1975 album ‘Next’). Harvey died on February 4th 1982.

1941, Barrett Strong, US songwriter. Wrote many Motown hits with Norman Whitfield including, ‘Money’, ‘War’, ‘Ball Of Confusion’, ‘Papa Was A Rolling Stone’.

My father taught me how to be a man — and not by instilling in me a sense of machismo or an agenda of dominance. He taught me that a real man doesn’t take, he gives; he doesn’t use force, he uses logic; doesn’t play the role of trouble-maker, but rather, trouble-shooter; and most importantly, a real man is defined by what’s in his heart, not his pants. - Kevin Smith, 1970-present

Laughing at our mistakes can lengthen our own life. Laughing at someone else’s can shorten it. – Cullen Hightower, 1923-2008

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 1975, American jazz, blues, songwriter and saxophonist Louis Jordon died aged 66. Known as “The King of the Jukebox”, between 1942-1950 he scored eighteen No.1 singles and fifty-four Top Ten hits on the US R&B chart

The weather is brighter today and the cat seems to be getting better. Tinker has been suffering from something he’s ingested and it is a good time to remind animal lovers that there are the dreaded Processional Caterpillars about. These are horrible creatures that spend a long time in a cocoon in the pine trees where they are taking the goodness from the tree before they drop and form a procession looking for their next tree. On no account must the animal go near them as they have very fine hairs which will immediately attack the respiratory system of the animal. If adults become victims there are also pretty horrendous results. I had one friend who unknowingly kicked a cocoon and then found himself with an ulcerated leg for three months. Anne, my wife, swept them away and found herself with a pretty inflamed rash on her neck for several weeks. The only way to get rid of their nesting cocoon is to…..BE VERY CAREFUL……get it down to the ground and burn it.

Here’s a Spanish word for the day

emplear em-pleh-ar’ (verb)

to use, to spend; to employ; to find a job

EXAMPLES

Puede emplear cualquier color que quiere. You can use whatever color you want.

Esta compañía emplea más que 200 trabajadores. Two Travelling Angels…….. this one will make you think twice! I was sent the following…….

Two travelling angels………. stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in themansion’s guest room.
Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a holein the wall and repaired it.. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, ”Things aren’t always what they seem”
The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, butvery hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angelssleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer andhis wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead inthe field. The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how couldyou have let this happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him, she accused. The second family had little but was willing to share everything, andyou let the cow die.. ”Things aren’t always what they seem,” the older angel replied.
“When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there wasgold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share hisgood fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn’t find it.” ”Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of deathcame for his wife I gave him the cow instead. Things aren’t always what they seem.” Sometimes that is exactly what happens when things don’t turn outthe way they should. If you have faith, you just need to trust thatevery outcome is always to your advantage. You just might not know ituntil sometime later…

1824 – J.W. Goodrich introduced rubber galoshes to the public. I used to have a pair of them

1904 – The Russo-Japanese War began after Japan laid siege to Port Arthur. It seemed ridiculous that Japan was the aggressor

1968 – The world’s largest hovercraft was launched at Cowes, Isle of Wight. These were very interesting when they first came along

1976 – An earthquake in Guatemala and Honduras killed more than 22,000 people. What awful statistics

1985 – U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s defence budget called for a tripling of the expenditure on the “Star Wars” research program. I don’t think everyone was sold on the validity of this project

1993 – Russian scientists unfurled a giant mirror in orbit and flashed a beam of sunlight across Europe during the night. Observers saw it only as a momentary flash.

1997 – President Milosevic of Serbia apparently surrendered to the will of his people

1998 – In northeast Afghanistan, at least 5,000 people were killed in an earthquake that measured 6.1 on the Richter Scale. Dreadful

The Day’s Music Events 4 February

1965, The Righteous Brothers were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with the Phil Spector song ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’. Also a US No.1 at the same time. In 1999 the PRS announced that it was the most played song of the 20th Century. This really is a great song and one early successful version was by the DJ Jimmy Young

1967, The Monkees self-titled debut album started a seven-week run at No.1 on the UK chart. We all remember the hits

1968, Working at Abbey Road studios, London, The Beatles recorded ‘Across the Universe.’ John and Paul decided the song needed some falsetto harmonies so they invited two girl fans into the studio to sing on the song. The two were Lizzie Bravo, a 16-year-old Brazilian living near Abbey Road and 17-year-old Londoner Gayleen Pease. These are two names to remember for pop trivia

1970, John Lennon and Yoko Ono donated their hair for an auction in aid of the Black Power movement. They were a cut above others

1975, American jazz, blues, songwriter and saxophonist Louis Jordon died aged 66. Known as “The King of the Jukebox”, between 1942-1950 he scored eighteen No.1 singles and fifty-four Top Ten hits on the US R&B chart. He was another of those artistes whose work is known but not always remembered
1978, Abba started a seven week run at No.1 on the UK chart with ‘The Album’ their third No.1 LP. Class act
1978, The Bee Gees started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Staying Alive’. From the film soundtrack Saturday Night Fever, it gave the brothers their fifth US No.1, also No.1 in the UK. Who doesn’t like this and who certainly doesn’t remember it?

1978, ‘Up Town Ranking’ by Althia and Donna was at No.1 on the UK singles chart. It was the Jamaican duo’s only hit making the teenagers One-hit Wonders. Quite good and a worthy hit but what was it all about?
1982, Scottish singer Alex Harvey died of a heart attack while waiting to take a ferry back to shore after performing a concert with his new band, the Electric Cowboys. In an ambulance on the way to the hospital, he suffered a second heart attack, this one fatal.
Another very sad pop story
1983, Karen Carpenter died aged 32 of a cardiac arrest at her parent’s house at her parents’ home in Downey, California; the coroner’s report gave the cause of death of imbalances associated with anorexia nervosa. In 1975 – In Playboy’s annual opinion poll; its readers voted Karen Carpenter the Best Rock Drummer of the year. This was a terribly sad event as Karen was such a talented and attractive lady. This needed to show everyone how serious Anorexia is as a problem to young people
1984, Culture Club started a three-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Karma Chameleon’ the group’s 5th US Top 10 hit, also a UK No.1- Good song

1984, Eurythmics scored their first UK No.1 album with their second release ‘Touch’, featuring the singles ‘Here Comes The Rain Again’, ‘Who’s That Girl’ and ‘Right By Your Side’. I loved these singles

1995, Celine Dion started a seven-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Think Twice’. The song peaked at No.95 on the US chart. ‘Think Twice’ received an Ivor Novello Award for the Song of the Year in 1995. I don’t remember this song

1999, American soul singer Gwen Guthrie died of cancer aged 48. Sang backing vocals for Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder and Madonna and wrote songs for Sister Sledge and Roberta Flack. Had the 1986 R&B No.1 ‘Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ on But the Rent’.I liked this single

2000, Bjorn Ulvaeus confirmed that the members of Abba had turned down a $1 billion (£0.58 billion) offer by American and British consortium to reform the group. “It is a hell of a lot of money to say no to, but we decided it wasn’t for us,” band member Benny Andersson told the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. Good for them. Maybe they had made enough money

2001, Atomic Kitten started a four-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Whole Again’, the group’s first UK chart topper. The song was written by Andy McCluskey from OMD. I like this single

2003, Courtney Love was arrested at Heathrow airport for ‘endangering an aircraft’ on a transatlantic flight. The singer was said to have hurled abuse at the cabin crew on the flight from Los Angeles to London after her nurse who was in an economy seat was barred access to sit with Love in the upper class cabin. Why do these popstars put themselves above the law?

2004, police questioned Noel Gallagher after a photograph of him trespassing on a railway line appeared in a newspaper. The Oasis guitarist was in a studio in Cornwall recording the bands new album when he took a walk along the railway line. British Transport Police said ‘he was setting a bad example.’ Thank goodness there are others in positions of authority that see popstars as people of privilege who should set a good example to young people

2008, Leona Lewis went to No.1 on the Australian album charts with her debut release ‘Spirit.’ Lovely singer

The day’s Podcast is always an interesting journey with the story of the day’s music over the years…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 1959, 22 year old Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, aged 17, died in a crash shortly after take-off from Clear Lake, Iowa, the pilot of the single-engined Beechcraft Bonanza plane was also killed. Holly hired the plane after heating problems developed on his tourbus.

It’s easy to overlook the fact that many people on the planet are still enjoying the legacy of Buddy Holly. It is very easy to overlook how young he was but his story is a fascinating on and I hope I have captured the atmosphere of his success and lifetime on the podcast I created as a tribute to him.

Our cat Tinker is not too well at the moment. He gets these fur balls which he normally coughs up eventually but I think he’s got a bit more than a fur ball. We have to keep our eye on him. Fortunately, next door we have a lady, Patricia, who is particularly good with cats and she is helping us look after him. It’s as bad as having children again!

Like most others I was unable to understand the ferocity of the disturbance that killed so many people at the football match in Egypt. I would have thought the young fans would be thrilled to watch their matches in a new political era but it would seem that, once again, the game of football has been a forum for such atrocious behaviour. The power of football is very misunderstood by many of its critics and for such a simple game its power is far reaching. I think the very least of its influences is to have played its part in creating the terrible mess the financial systems around the world are witnessing. If a footballer is worth 250. 000 pounds per week and a prime minister is worth 250.000 pounds per year I offer this one fact as a reason why we’re all in a mess. Throw in a few bankers and politicians and dodgy agents and I’ll leave the rest to your imagination!

Here’s the proof we do have snow on the Costa Blanca. This is the mountain at the top of our road…..

I was sent a stack of Tommy Cooper jokes the other day…We’ve seen them before but they might cheer up an odd person!

Phone answering machine message – ‘…If you want to buy marijuana, press the hash key…’

A guy walks into the psychiatrist wearing only Clingfilm for shorts. The shrink says, ‘Well, I can clearly see you’re nuts.’

I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn’t find any.

I went to the butchers the other day and I bet him 50 quid that he couldn’t reach the meat off the top shelf. He said,
‘No, the steaks are too high.’

My friend drowned in a bowl of muesli. A strong currant pulled him in.

I went to a seafood disco last week and pulled a muscle.

Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly.. They lit a fire in the craft, it sank, proving once and for all that you can’t have your kayak and heat it.

Man goes to the doctor, with a strawberry growing out of his head.
Doc says ‘I’ll give you some cream to put on it.’

‘Doc I can’t stop singing ‘The Green, Green Grass of Home’
‘That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome. ’
‘Is it common?’
‘It’s not unusual.’

A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet. ‘My dog is cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him?’
‘Well,’ said the vet, ‘let’s have a look at him’
So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then he checks his teeth. Finally, he says, Im going to have to put him down.’ ‘What? Because he’s cross-eyed?’
‘No, because he’s really heavy’

What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh.

So I was getting into my car, and this bloke says to me ‘Can you give me a lift?’
I said ‘Sure, you look great, the world’s your oyster, go for it..’

Apparently, 1 in 5 people in the world are Chinese. There are 5 people in my family, so it must be one of them. It’s either my mum or my Dad, or my older brother Colin, or my younger brother Ho-Cha-Chu. But I think its Colin.

Police arrested two kids yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, and the other was eating fireworks. They charged one and let the other one off.

You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen. It said, ‘Parking Fine.’ So that was nice.’

A man walked into the doctors, he said, ‘I’ve hurt my arm in several places’
The doctor said, Well don’t go there anymore!

I’m sorry mate, do it yourself, spend some of your own money and get it done. It just makes me angry.” I can understand both points of view

1962, The Beatles played their first professionally organised gig outside of Liverpool at The Oasis Club, Manchester. The group’s set started with their version of ‘Hippy Hippy Shake.’

The weather is a lot colder and we have a sprinkling of snow on the mountains. This is nothing compared with the extremes being suffered elsewhere and even on the BBC news I was watching cold alerts and the preparations to help the elderly. It does seem strange that we can get these sharp bursts of cold weather the day after sitting in the sun down in Benidorm. My brain also finds it more difficult to accept the concept of global warming on a day like this.

I have just been disciplining myself to watch the Spanish television which, in terms of language skills, takes me out of my comfort zone. Remembering our son Andrew is working in the UK as the boss of a branch of a Spanish company I was interested to see a programme about Spanish exports. The company in the film was from Teruel and was a family company making goat’s cheese which they were exporting to China, Japan and several other countries. The one salient point that came from the programme was the necessity for the use of English as a common denominator when doing business.

I had an absolutely absorbing day yesterday and found myself with a head full of Spanish verbs trying to get out and be used. I really had a bad day with the tenses and I’m going to blame the cat as he’s been off colour and I have been worrying about him! If you have been having a bad day I’ve put this link in for you to escape to a little bit of really good music! Please don’t go just yet. You can always finish the blog first!

You might have noticed that I have been resurrecting some really funny stories and today is a Burns special. …….Prince Charles is visiting an Edinburgh hospital. He enters a ward full of patients with no obvious sign of injury or illness and greets one
The patient replies:

“Fair fa your honest sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin race,
Aboon them a ye tak yer place,
Painch, tripe or thairm,
As langs ma airm.”

Charles is confused, so he just grins and moves on to the next patient. > The
patient responds:

“Some hae meat an canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it,
But we hae meat an we can eat,
So let the Lord be thankit.”

Even more confused, and his grin now rictus-like, the Prince moves on to > the
next patient, who immediately begins to chant:

“Wee sleekit, courin, timrous beasty,
O whit a panic’s in thy breasty,
Tha needna start awa sae hastie,
Wi bickerin’ brattle.”

Now seriously troubled, Charles turns to the accompanying doctor and asks
“Is this a psychiatric ward?”

No,” replies the doctor, “this is the serious Burns unit.”

……………………………………………………………………………..

A friend from the UK sends the following for us to ponder over….taxpayers will again receive another ‘Economic Stimulus’ payment.

This is indeed a very exciting program, and I’ll explain it by using a Q & A format:

Q. What is an ‘Economic Stimulus’ payment ?

A. It is money that the government will send to taxpayers.

Q. Where will the government get this money ?

A. From taxpayers.

Q. So the government is giving me back my own money ?

A. Only a smidgen of it.

Q. What is the purpose of this payment ?

A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

Q. But isn’t that stimulating the economy of China ?

A. Shut up.

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the U.K. economy by spending your stimulus cheque wisely:

* If you spend the stimulus money at Asda or Tesco, the money will go to China , Taiwan or Sri Lanka .

* If you spend it on petrol, your money will go to the Arabs.

* If you purchase a computer, it will go to India , Taiwan or China .

* If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico , Honduras and Guatemala .

* If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea .

* If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan .

* If you pay your credit cards off, or buy shares, it will go to management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.

Instead, keep the money in the UK by:

1) Spending it at car boot sales, or

2) Going to night clubs, or

3) Spending it on prostitutes, or

4) Beer or whisky or

5) Tattoos.

(These are the only UK businesses still operating in the U.K. )

Conclusion:

Be patriotic – go to a night club with a tattooed prostitute that you met at a car boot sale and drink beer day and night.

————-

HOSPITAL GETTING BETTER

The Torrevieja Hospital has announced that it has joined an international network that integrates the most advanced medical centres in the world.

“The Advisory Board” is an organization dedicated to research and advisory experience and encompasses more than 3,000 hospitals and healthcare organizations around the world. Professionals have the ability to access a wide world of information and research on strategy, best practices and productivity to improve hospital life.

ARRESTS FOR IRON THEFT

The Guardia Civil in Alicante have arrested six men, all believed to be of Romanian origin, accused of a crime of theft, after they were caught cutting iron beams from the roof of a warehouse in Villena.

The men, aged between 23 and 43, only carried out the work in the evening, which raised the suspicions of investigating officers. After checking with the owner of the building, they found that the work was not approved and have now sought criminal case against the men who they found had forced their way into the premises to carry out the theft.

MUM AND SON DRUG RING SMASHED

A 47 year old woman and her two sons aged 23 and 26, all of Czech nationality, have been arrested in Alicante accused of cultivating and distributing cannabis at their home in the city centre, where a greenhouse has been dismantled and 320 marijuana plants, eleven kilograms of the drug, 600 euro in cash and numerous tools and instruments for the cultivation of cannabis were seized.

In addition, those arrested had been fraudulently using a power supply from outside their property, not paying for their electricity being used.

The family will be put before the courts facing a range of fraud and drug related charges.

PAY MORE FOR YOUR LEMONS

The president of the group of Valencia citrus growers, José Barrés Gabardá, has asked that all farmers have a unified approach and increase the prices of the fruit, to avoid recent losses incurred as some farmers were unable to compete.

Some farmers have been giving fruit away, as they were unable to afford to package and sell the fruit due to the lower prices across the sector.

The president also stressed that “we need to revive citrus consumption in foreign markets and continue to undertake promotion, marketing communication and enabling a better position for the distribution of citrus fruit”.

The treaty turned over portions of land to the U.S., including Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, California and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. The U.S. gave Mexico $15,000,000 and assumed responsibility of all claims against Mexico by American citizens. Texas had already entered the U.S. on December 29, 1845. When I visited California it felt very Spanish in parts and I enjoyed that ambience

1848 – The first shipload of Chinese emigrants arrived in San Francisco, CA. This is why they have the oldest chinese population group in the world outside of China

1946 – The first Buck Rogers automatic pistol was made. Bad

1962 – The 8th and 9th planets aligned for the first time in 400 years. God knows how they work these things out!

1971 – Idi Amin assumed power in Uganda after a coup that ousted President Milton Obote. This guy helped the world understand the word despot

1962, The Beatles played their first professionally organised gig outside of Liverpool at The Oasis Club, Manchester. The group’s set started with their version of ‘Hippy Hippy Shake.’ Does anybody else think it’s weird that they played the Oasis gig….Gallaghers etc

The Beatles were at the bottom of the six-act bill playing just four songs, ‘Please Please Me’, ‘Chains’, ‘Keep Your Hands Off My Baby’ and ‘A Taste of Honey.’ Helen Shapiro has been on my show.

1966, The Rolling Stones released ’19th Nervous Breakdown’ it peaked at No.2 on the UK singles chart. OK but not my Stones favourite song

2001, Bad Manners singer Buster Bloodvessel was told he was ‘too fat’ to survive an urgently needed operation. Buster collapsed on stage during a show in Italy but Doctors felt that his huge 30 stone frame might not make it through surgery. This surely has to send a message to overweight people to take more care of themselves
