That is what marriage really means: helping one another to reach the full status of being persons, responsible and autonomous beings who do not run away from life. - Paul Tournier, 1898-1986

Today’s Podcast is a great journey with the story of the day’s music down the tunnel of time to light up your ears…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.  1975, The Carpenters went to No.1 on the US singles chart with their version of The Marveletts 1961 hit ‘Please Mr. Postman’

Well, it was another lovely day yesterday with clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine. Eric came over and we made the new Alfaz Fantasy Football podcast and then I was busy checkin and renewing my RSS feeds for the website. This was quite a big job and is ongoing.

It is Spanish class today and I am going to battle against the Subjunctive for an hour or so. Tonight will be a big football night with Liverpool playing Man City and Real Madrid playing Barcelona. I have a pretty good idea which will be the better game and I suppose you might suspect which match I mean…….

This is good info. We did not know that you should not lie down whilewaiting for the EMT
Heart attack info new aspirin / serious stuff, no joke!  Just a reminder to all: purchase a box, keep one inyour car, pocketbook, wallet, bedside, etc.   Important read . . .

Something that we can do to help ourselves.
Nice to know.

Why keep aspirin by your bedside?

About Heart Attacks
There are other symptoms of an heart attack besidesthe pain on the left arm. One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea andlots of sweating, however these symptoms may alsooccur less frequently. Note: There may be NO pain in the chest during aheart attack
The majority of people (about 60%) who had a heartattack during their sleep, did not wake up.  However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake youup from your deep sleep.
If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirinsin your mouth and swallow them with a bit of water.Afterwards:  CALL 911 - say “heart attack!” - say that you have taken 2 aspirins.- phone a neighbor or a family member who lives  very close by- take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door,  and wait for their arrival and . . . Do not lie down
A Cardiologist has stated that, if each person, after receiving this e-mail, sends it to 10 people, probably one life can be saved!
I have already shared the information- – Whatabout you?
Do forward this message; it may save lives!

François , a middle-aged French tourist on his first visit to Orlando , Florida , finds the red light district and enters a large brothel.
The madam asks him to be seated and sends over a young lady to entertain him. They sit and talk, frolic a little, giggle a bit, drink a bit, and she sits on his lap. He whispers in her ear and she gasps and runs away!
Seeing this, the madam sends over a more experienced lady to entertain the gentleman.
They sit and talk, frolic a little, giggle a bit, drink a bit, and she sits on his lap. He whispers in her ear, and she too screams, “No!” and walks quickly away.
The madam is surprised that this ordinary looking man has asked for something so outrageous that her two girls will have nothing to dowith him. She decides that only her most experienced lady, Lola, will do. Lola has never said no, and it’s not likely anything would surprise her.So the madam sends her over to François. They sit and talk, frolic a little, giggle a bit, drink a bit, and she sits on his lap. He whispers in her ear and she screams, “NO WAY, BUDDY!” and smacks him as hard as she can and leaves.Madam is by now absolutely intrigued, having seen nothing like this in all her years of operating a brothel. She hasn’t done the bedroom workherself for a long time, but she’s sure she has said yes to everything a man could possibly ask for. She just has to find out what this man wants that has made her girls so angry. Besides she sees a chance to teach her employees a lesson.
So she goes over to François and says that she’s the best in the house and is available. She sits and talks with him. They frolic, giggle, drink andthen she sits in his lap.
François leans forwards and whispers in her ear,  Can I pay in Euros?”

…………………………………………………………………..

A guy was getting ready to tee off on the first hole when a second golfer approached and asked if he could join him. The first said that he usually played alone, but agreed to the twosome.

They were even after the first few holes.  The second guy said, “We’re about evenly matched, how about playing for five bucks a hole?” The first guy said that he wasn’t much for betting, but agreed to the terms.

The second guy won the remaining sixteen holes with ease.

As they were walking off number eighteen, the second guy was busy counting his $80.00.  He confessed that he was the pro at a neighboring course and liked to pick on suckers. The first fellow revealed that he was the Parish Priest.

The pro was flustered and apologetic, offering to return the money. The Priest said, “You won fair and square and I was foolish to bet with you. You keep your winnings.”

The pro said, “Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?”

The Priest said, “Well, you could come to Mass on Sunday and make a donation. And, if you want to bring your mother and father along, I’ll marry them.

A mind once stretched by a new idea never regains its original dimensions.”

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”–Chinese Traveller

Today’s Podcast is a great journey with the story of the day’s music down the tunnel of time to light up your ears…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 1953, Eddie Fisher was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Outside Is Heaven’. American singer and entertainer divorced his first wife, Debbie Reynolds to marry his best friend’s widow, Elizabeth Taylor, too much unwelcome publicity at the time. Eddie is father of actress Carrie Fisher

I am now on a countdown to some pretty bi events and the weather has turned to its brilliant best here on the Costa Blanca. I have a seemingly endless pile of work to complete and just four weeks within which to complete. However, I like being busy and aim to get everything done.

Thanks to my friend Sheenagh for the following…….
GRANDPARENTS’ ANSWERING MACHINE

If you want to come to eat here, press 8

If you need money, press 9

If you are going to invite us to dinner, or, taking us to the theater, start talking … we are listening !!!!!!!!!!!”   WHAT IS A GRANDPARENT?

(Taken from papers written by a class of 8-year-olds)   Grandparents are a lady and a man who have no little children of their own. They like other people’s.   A grandfather is a man, & a grandmother is a lady!   Grandparents don’t have to do anything except be there when we come to see them…; They are so old they shouldn’t play hard or run. It is good if they drive us to the shops and give us money.   When they take us for walks, they slow down past things like pretty leaves and caterpillars.   They show us and talk to us about the colors of the flowers and also why we shouldn’t step on ‘cracks.’   They don’t say, ‘Hurry up.’   Usually grandmothers are fat but not too fat to tie your shoes.

They wear glasses and funny underwear.   Grandparents don’t have to be smart.  They have to answer questions like ‘Why isn’t God married?’ and ‘How come dogs chase cats?’   When they read to us, they don’t skip. They don’t mind if we ask for the same story over again.  Everybody should try to have a grandmother, especially if you don’t have television because they are the only grownups who like to spend time with us.    They know we should have a snack time before bed time, and they say prayers with us and kiss us even when we’ve acted bad.   GRANDPA IS THE SMARTEST MAN ON EARTH! HE TEACHES ME GOOD THINGS, BUT I DON’T GET TO SEE HIM ENOUGH TO GET AS SMART AS HIM!    It’s funny when they bend over; you hear gas leaks, and they blame their dog.

Spare a thought for Michael O’Leary, Chief Executive of ‘Ryanair’ Arriving in a hotel in Dublin, he went to the bar and asked for a pint of draught Guinness. The barman nodded and said, “That will be one Euro please, Mr. O’Leary.”
Somewhat taken aback, O’Leary replied, “That’s very cheap,” and handed over his money.
“Well, we try to stay ahead of the competition”, said the barman. “And we are serving free pints every Wednesday evening from 6 until 8. We have the cheapest beer in Ireland”
“That is remarkable value” Michael comments
“I see you don’t seem to have a glass, so you’ll probably need one of ours – That will be 3 euro please.”
O’Leary scowled, but paid up. He took his drink and walked towards a seat.
“Ah, you want to sit down?” said the barman. “That’ll be an extra 2 euro. – You could have pre-booked the seat, and it would have only cost you a Euro.”
“I think you may to be too big for the seat sir, can I ask you to sit in this frame please”
Michael attempts to sit down but the frame is too small and when he can’t squeeze in he complains “Nobody would fit in that little frame”.”I’m afraid if you can’t fit in the frame you’ll have to pay an extra surcharge of 4.00 euro for your seat sir”
O’Leary swore to himself, but paid up. “I see that you have brought your laptop with you” added the barman. “And since that wasn’t pre-booked either, that will be another 3 euro.”
O’Leary was so annoyed that he walked back to the bar, slammed his drink on the counter, and yelled, “This is ridiculous, I want to speak to the manager”.
“Ah, I see you want to use the counter,” says the barman, “that will be 2 euro please.” O’Leary’s face was red with rage.
“Do you know who I am?”
“Of course I do Mr. O’Leary,”
“I’ve had enough, What sort of Hotel is this? I come in for a quiet drink and you treat me like this. I insist on speaking to a manager!”
“Here is his E mail address, or if you wish, you can contact him between 9 and 9.10 every morning, Monday to Tuesday at this free phone number. Calls are free, until they are answered, then there is a talking charge of only 10 cent per second”
“I will never use this bar again”
“OK sir, but remember, we are the only hotel in Ireland selling pints for one Euro”.

Eddie is father of actress Carrie Fisher. My older friends are really into this kind of story. It has a lot of old movie feel to it.
1958, Elvis Presley was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Jailhouse Rock’. It became the first ever single to enter the chart at No.1 and was Presley’s second UK No.1. It went on to sell over 4 million copies in the US. This is the music that helped launch the legend
1958, The Quarry Men performed at the Cavern Club, in Liverpool, (this was the bands only performance at the club). It was three years later when they appeared again at the Cavern but under their new name as The Beatles. Nice bit of pop trivia
1962, Brian Epstein signed a management deal with The Beatles. Epstein was to receive 25 per cent of the bands gross earnings, the normal management deal was 10 per cent. I would say Epstein was worth his money

1968, Georgie Fame was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘The Ballad Of Bonnie and Clyde’, the singers third and last UK No.1. I can’t really say this was the real Georgie Fame for me

1976, Diana Ross went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Theme From Mahogany’, the singers third US No.1, a No.5 hit in the UK. Not one of her best for me

1979, The Clash released their first single in the US, ‘I Fought The Law’ (written by Sonny Curtis of Buddy Holly’s Crickets). I think I still prefer the version by Bobby Fuller
1980, A billboard was erected on Sunset Strip, West Hollywood, California to promote Pink Floyd’s new album ‘The Wall’. Every day workmen added another brick to the wall until it was finished. I think everyone knows another brick

1995, David Cole producer, keyboards, C & C Music Factory died of meningitis aged 32. (1991 UK No.4 single ‘Things That Make You Go Hmmm…’,This is one great track

1998, Oasis went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘All Around The World’. The longest running-time for a UK No.1 with a total duration of 9 minutes 38 seconds. I like this track. I like a lot of Oasis music. Noel lets the band down

2005, Country singer Lynn Anderson was arrested for shoplifting after being caught stealing a Harry Potter DVD from a New Mexico supermarket and punching a police officer during her arrest. The 57 year-old had the 1970 Top 5 hit ‘Rose Garden’. This is sad

2008, Amy Winehouse was admitted into rehab in a battle to kick her addiction to drugs. A statement from her record company, Universal said she entered the facility “after talks with her record label, management, family and doctors to continue her ongoing recovery against drug addiction.” She has a great voice and is a great talent

Today’s Podcast is a great journey with the story of the day’s music down the tunnel of time to light up your ears…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.1956, Rock ‘n’ Roll fans in Cleveland aged under 18 were banned from dancing in public (unless accompanied by an adult), after Ohio Police introduced a law dating back to 1931.

Before I go any further I must wish all my Asian friends a very happy New Year.

Kung Hei Fat Choi

It’s a beautiful sunny day here on the Costa Blanca.

Places I’ve Been and Haven’t Been

I have been in many places, but I’ve never been in Cahoots.
Apparently, you can’t go alone. You have to be in Cahoots
with someone.

I’ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes
you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport;
you have to be driven there. I have made several trips
there, thanks to my friends, family, and work.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and
I’m not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I
try not to visit there too often.

I’ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important
to stand firm.

Sometimes I’m in Capable, and I go there more often as I’m
getting older.

One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really
gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my
age I need all the stimuli I can get!

I may have been in Continent, but I don’t remember what
country I was in. It’s an age thing.

Today’s Podcast is a great journey with the story of the day’s music down the tunnel of time to light up your ears…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 1959, alone with an acoustic guitar and tape recorder in his New York City apartment Buddy Holly made his last recordings, including ‘Peggy Sue Got Married’, ‘Crying, Waiting, Hoping’, ‘That’s What They Say’, ‘What To Do’, ‘Learning The Game’ and ‘That Makes It Tough’. The recordings would be overdubbed posthumously and were later released by Coral Records

It’s a beautiful day and we’ve been down to Benidorm for a walk along the prom at Levante and a nice cup of coffee with the half-naked Brits! Whilst we were fairly trussed up there were some brits on the beach in bikinis…..

I thought I’d begin today’s blog by remembering some of the great personalities who have affected my life and who were yesterday’s birthdays.  You must remember a man born in 1925.  Telly Savalas, was an  actor who had the 1975 UK No.1 single ‘If’. He played Lt. Theo Kojak a bald New York City detective in the television series Kojak, with a fondness for lollipops and whose trademark line was “Who loves ya, baby?”  Sadly, he died of cancer on 22nd January 1994. However, I think the current trend of bald headed men in the UK can be ascribed to his influence! We were told the ladies loved his looks although I just couldn’t see this.  Then another birthday was one of the fabulous three tenors, Placido Domingo. This wonderful Spanish singer was born in 1941 and he had the 1994 UK No.21 single with Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti, ‘Libiamo / La Donna E Mobile’.

Every time we are talking about really good soul music the name of a man born in 1942, Edwin Starr, comes into the conversation. This Motown singer was born in 1970 and had the US No.1 and UK No.3 single ‘War’. This just happens to be one of my all-time favourite songs. Sadly Starr died on 2nd April 2003 aged 61. He lived in England for the latter part of his career and seemed to visit Cornwall on a fairly regular basis.

Today’s Podcast is a great journey with the story of the day’s music down the tunnel of time to light up your ears…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.1957, English singer Frankie Vaughan was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘The Garden Of Eden’. What makes someone want to create problems for others by creating computer virus programmes and trying to mess up our online enjoyment? Why would someone spend their time and energies trying to be so destructive? I ask these questions as I have been asked to circulate the following warning. My friend who is the editor of an online magazine has sent the following…….

*****URGENT********
I have just had a telephone call from an ‘Indian’. He claims to be calling me from ‘Windows’ because of errors messages being sent from my computer back to ‘Windows’.
Not everyone out there will realise that this is a MAJOR SCAM.
They called my house and knew my name.
I was told to go and turn on my computer.
When I asked him what my IP address was he said it was 192.168.1.2 – this is an IP address used (commonly) to connect your router with your pc…..It is NOT your IP address that accesses the internet.
And UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WOULD YOU EVER – EVER CONNECT TO A PROGRAM CALLED TEAMVIEWER IF ASKED DURING ONE OF THESE CALLS……the program itself is great and is a way of connecting to your own computer if you are away from it – remote access.
SO IMAGINE…….SOMEONE YOU DO NOT KNOW ASKS YOU TO DO THIS, WELL, GIVE THEM THE INFORMATION AND WHAM THEY HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR COMPUTER FROM WHEREVER THEY ARE IN THE WORLD……NEVER, EVER DO IT.
For God’s sake DO NOT give any details or do anything to your pc if you receive one of these calls. The safest option to is hang up the telephone….but be prepared…they are persistent and WILL keep trying. Following my calls I searched for similar on Google. The following link may be useful for you to read, so, if you have any doubts, copy and paste it, then read for yourself!

http://money-watch.co.uk/7118/beware-of-the-windows-phone-scam

PLEASE TAKE NOTE…THIS CALL WAS IN ENGLISH AND NOT SPANISH AS ONE WOULD EXPECT, GIVEN THAT I LIVE IN SPAIN. THE GUY AT THE OTHER END DID NOT SPEAK SPANISH. SO MAYBE, THEY ARE NOW TARGETING THE ENGLISH SOUNDING NAMES IN THE PHONE BOOK OR WHEREVER THEY GET THEIR LISTS FROM.

————————————
I found the following extract interesting………….
Heat Up Your Health
You already know that your body sweats to cool you down. But sweating is also one of your body’s best ways to get rid of waste and pollutants.
It’s faster than any other natural method of detox because it opens pores, so you can flush out impurities more efficiently.
Saunas also improve circulation and oxygenate your tissues, too. And a sauna session can relieve stress, arthritis symptoms, and bring nutrients to the surface for younger-looking skin.
You may already be familiar with the “steam” type of sauna. But there’s another sauna you should know about. It’s called an infrared sauna. These use a different heat source that’s been proven in clinical trials to raise core temperature, lower blood pressure, and aid in weight-reduction.

Today’s Podcast is a great journey with the story of the day’s music down the tunnel of time to light up your ears…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 2002, George Harrison had the posthumous UK No.1 single with the re-release of the 1971 former No.1 ‘My Sweet Lord’. Harrison’s single replaced Aaliyah’s ‘More Than A Woman’, the only time in chart history that one deceased artist had taken over from another at No.1.

It always makes me laugh when the soaps try to justify their controversial story lines. The argument is usually that they feel it is their duty to reflect what is going on in society. If this is the case why does nobody ever talk about football for in real life there is always a lot of banter about the various important matches. Of course, the answer will quickly be given that the programmes would be very time and date affected. Yes. I agree this would be the case but it might take a little more ingenuity and prove the worth of their scriptwriting abilities. Fair enough but don’t people talk about the weather? Could this not be introduced now and again as it is always a topic of conversation? I never hear people on the soaps talking about the serious issues of the day in the sense of political events and issues. Yes. This would surely test their scriptwriting skills.  I have heard no mention about the Olympic Games or other major sporting events. Another major topic of conversation. I haven’t heard any mention of the adverts that people see on TV. Doesn’t anybody in any soap anywhere watch real programmes like Dickinson’s Real Deal, Celebrity Master Chef or Escape to the Country or the sort of drivel we all endure. Doesn’t anybody read the Sun? I am reliably informed that 4.5 million people actually buy the rag?

On the subject of TV advertising I have noticed a few quite tacky adverts infiltrating the UK screens. The number of men in drag appearing in adverts has also grown quite noticeably and I am wondering what is the hidden agenda. The number of money related advertising is also on the increase and I was led to believe this was an area of concern

TORREVIEJA HAS MORE RUBBISH

According to figures released this week by the councillor responsible for urban cleanliness, Antonio Boix, residents and visitors to Torrevieja generated 59,810 tons of collected waste, an increase of 4.62% over the previous year, when 57,168 tons were collected.

August 2011 was the busiest month in the history of refuse collection in the city, when 7,449 tons of waste was collected, closely followed by July, when 6,534 tons were gathered.

The figures also show that recycling is becoming more popular, with an increase of 8.8% from 4,762 tons in 2010 to 5,182 tons in 2011.

ALCOHOL EDUCATION FOR MIDWIVES

Torrevieja Hospital hosted a conference this week, aimed at training midwives and nursing professionals, with a focus on awareness of problems associated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy and lactation.

The session is part of the awareness campaign, directed by Esteban Jiménez Pina, senior research technician, in which it is hoped that medical staff will be equipped with the information needed to enable them to pass on advice relating to the risks and management of alcohol consumption by pregnant women, that can cause foetal alcohol syndrome as well as complications such as premature delivery, they say.

INCREASE IN ENGLISH NEEDED

The Servicio Valenciano de Empleo y Formación (Servef), which looks after training needs of people looking for employment in the Valencia region, has said that there is an increased need for better training for its members in both the hospitality sector and in languages, especially English and German.

The association believes that this is the best way of ensuring long term employment for the trainees who will then be in a better position to get jobs as waiters and cleaners.

GANG ARRESTS IN TORREVIEJA

Twelve people from Torrevieja, Los Montesinos and the Orihuela Costa, were arrested this week in a joint operation between the National Police of Alicante and the Guardia Civil of Almería, charged with a number of offenses relating to theft.

The courts have issued a gagging order on the case to prevent any risk of the case being influenced, but they have issued notice that the majority of the detainees were of Algerian nationality.

SCHOOL BLANKET PHOTOGRAPHER EXPELLED

A student from the instituto Vila-roja de Almassora school has been expelled, after a photograph he took of his classmates wrapped in blankets whilst trying to keep warm in class, which subsequently appeared in a variety of newspapers and websites, was considered to “discredit” the image of the educational centre.

The student had taken the photograph to show the actions that he and his fellow students were taking to keep warm, after the school was unable to pay its heating bills due to the financial crisis.

Upon hearing the news of his expulsion, his fellow students staged a walk out, which has resulted in his reinstatement at the school.

1965, American disc-jockey Alan Freed died from uraemia at the age of 42. Freed called himself the “father of rock and roll”, appeared in the movies such as Rock Around The Clock and Don’t Knock the Rock. His career was destroyed by the payola scandal that hit the broadcasting industry in the early 1960s. His is a sad story as he was a huge influence who died almost unnoticed
1966, The Spencer Davis Group UK No.1  ‘Keep On Running’. The bass was very prominent on this track but I felt the influence was coming from the keyboard
1967, The Monkees TV show was shown for the first time in the UK. Sorry but this was awful
1968, One hit wonders John Fred and the Playboy Band started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Judy In Disguise, (With Glasses)’, UK No.3. The song was inspired by The Beatles ‘Lucy In The Sky’. I just saw this as a great party track that got everyone going

1975, The US Top 5 singles: No.5, Stevie Wonder, ‘Boogie On Reggae Woman’, No.4, Ohio Players, ‘Fire’, No.3, Barry Manilow, ‘Mandy’, No.2, Neil Sedaka, ‘Laughter In The Rain’, No.1, The Carpenters, ‘Please Mr Postman’. This might have been the American top five but I played all of them

1982, During a Ozzy Osbourne concert in Des Moines, Iowa, a member of the audience threw an unconscious bat onto the stage. Thinking it was one of his rubber fakes, Ozzy picked it up and bit off its head. The singer was taken to hospital to be given a rabies injection. I’ll bet his heart was in his mouth when he realised the full implications of what had happened.

1985, Foreigner had their only UK No.1 single with ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’. London-born Mick Jones wrote the song and sang lead vocals with the British-American rock band. This is a fabulous rock song

1986, Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan appeared at a concert to celebrate the first Martin Luther King day in the US. Quite rightly
1988, The Beatles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and Yoko, Sean, and Julian Lennon all attend. Paul McCartney does not attend, sending instead a letter stating that continuing business differences with the other ex-Beatles was the reason for his absence. I’ll bet in hindsight he regretted doing this

1990, Michael Bolton started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘How Am I Supposed To Live Without You’, the singers first No.1 and the first No.1 single of the 90′s in the US. He had a lovely TV series last year and showed a lovely personality as well as a big voice

1999, Bill Albaugh drummer from the 1960’s psychedelic group The Lemon Pipers died aged 53. Had the 1967 US No.1 single ‘Green Tambourine’. I loved this haunting 60s psychedelic song

2000, Ray Jones, bass player with Billy J Kramer and the The Dakotas died.Good group dominated by their lead singer

2000, Tourism chiefs in Liverpool were banned from putting up motorway signs saying ‘Liverpool, the Birthplace Of The Beatles’, because the Highways Agency thought the signs would distract motorists. This was errant nonsense

2001, A memorial service was held for Kirsty MacColl who was killed in a boating accident off the coast of Mexico in December 2000. Bono from U2 and Billy Bragg were among friends and fans that packed St Martin-in-the-fields church in London. I think she will always be remembered at Christmas

What a bizarre piece of pop trivia

2006, American music executive Johnny Bienstock died of complications from heart disease aged 83. Owned Moss Rose Music, worked with Ernest Tubb, Hank Snow, Elvis Presley, The Bee Gees, Eric Clapton, Del Shannon and Meat Loaf. Another hugely influential name I hadn’t known

Today’s Podcast is a great journey with the story of the day’s music down the tunnel of time to light up your ears…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.  1963, The Beatles made their first national TV appearance in the UK on ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’ performing ‘Please Please Me’.

The weather has been a little bit better although we still have  in the air. We do need the rain so I mustn’t grumble and although we are a little colder than usual we are still better off than most other places. Certainly in the centre and north of Spain there is snow.

Football returns to the TV tonight and, although I am writing for tomorrow, I am certainly not in the mood to listen to the experts waffling on about the game. I am more intrigued to see later whether or not there might be a rather dodgy reffing decision as I am sure the referees are being got at. Every week a bad decision spoils a game somewhere so why don’t they use the technology to0 see whether fouls given have been justifiable. It makes no sense for everyone to be able to see what happens on television and one man with a whistle to defy what we have seen by sending off an innocent man or blowing for a dodgy penalty. Why don’t they use the technology? I suspect there is far too much betting money involved. What is the biggest problem in the world today? Dodgy money! I rest my case.

Are the bankers changing their habits after all the recent problems?…….

GOLDMAN Sachs was slammed for “living in a parallel universe” today after handing each and every banker an AVERAGE of £240,000.  The notorious investment bank paid out £8 billion to its staff around the world in pay, bonuses and shares for 2011. Around £1.5 billion will go to employees in the City of London. It’s an average of £238,000 each. The “compensation” pot for last year is down by a fifth on the previous year.

But Goldmans’ profits HALVED as money-spinning work at its investment bank dried up in the crisis. British TUC general secretary Brendan Barber called the bonanza “excessive rewards for mediocrity”. Source

This also links nicely with another report….

THE Bank of England yesterday accused banks of starving small firms of cash — by blowing money on sky-high bonuses for top staff.

In an unprecedented attack, one of its senior policymakers said it was clear that banks could do more to boost lending.

Robert Jenkins, of the Bank’s financial policy committee, told MPs: “Every billion less on bonuses would support £20billion of additional small business lending.”  Source

THE 50 EURO MAN HAS RETURNED

The Neighbourhood Watch are warning that our seasonal visitor has returned to the Orihuela Costa over the last week end and has been seen plying his trade in a number of the Residencias, asking for money on a false pretence. What he does is not an offence under the Spanish law.

He knocks on doors asking for money to pay for a locksmith as he has either lost his house keys or had his house broken into. He says that he is living in a house close by and gives his address. The house selected is unoccupied at this time and is not his or is non-existent. He has to pay the locksmith and can´t get enough money from a cash machine to do so. Sometimes he finds out the name of the President of the Residencia and says that the President knows him.

Over the years he has asked to borrow 30, 50 and 40 euros. If you are lucky you may be invited to attend a party at his house or to go there for a drink.

Another story is that he needs to go to the German Embassy in Alicante with his children and asks to borrow the money to get there.

He is very plausible in his tale and may change his story.

Description:- He is in his forties, tall with fair hair and previously scruffily dressed. He speaks perfect English. He has said that he is from Hanover in Germany, Holland or Denmark and his name is Martin but this might again be part of his tale.

Please warn as many people as possible not to be taken in by this scam.

Today’s Podcast is a great journey with the story of the day’s music down the tunnel of time to light up your ears…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day. 1964, The Beatles made their US chart debut when ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ entered the chart at No.45 just ten days after its release, making it the fastest-breaking and the fastest selling single in Capitol Records history.

I had a choice last night of either watching the TV or a tin of Dulux paint drying. I should have chosen the Dulux. Although I wasn’t watching it myself it was droning on in the background. Eastenders was a little bit irritating as Bianca didn’t want Ricky to stay and keep the kids happy. I think the programme makers are as mixed up as the messages their programmes give out. Were they trying to show us that the woman cause the problems or does it show us that some men are quite responsible in that they would like to stay with their children? God only knows. I don’t. Never mind the sun is still hiding and the rain is still falling.

Will we ever know what will have happened on the Italian cruise liner that has been floundering? Is the captain to blame?  Was he showboating? More passengers have just been found with their lifejackets on but too late. Why did the captain leave the ship when passengers were still to be saved? What a really sad event and how can people overcome such tragedy. Also, I add a word about the bravery of the rescuers. These guys are so brave and when I think of how they risk their lives and then stack up their value against the immoral money paid each week to footballers.

I’m off to my Spanish class early tomorrow so my podcast will be posted very early….

I made a new podcast on Monday with Barbara Clarke, a member of the 50s to 70s Revival Group on Facebook. I think this shows the better side of the internet. I was looking at the quality of the songs she was posting into the group for others to enjoy and I thought she might like to join me in the venture. I had no idea what her voice might sound like but I had a good idea of her kind of music. I also believe that you can get to know a bit about each other by the type of music we like. If someone is always preferring slushy ballads that would tend to make me feel I was meeting a sentimental and softer nature. If , however, someone prefers to listen to satanic rock music all day then I’d have other ideas? What do you think?

I remember when the kids were young and they’d come home from school. Usually, they would put on their music and this would give me an idea of their mood. If they’d had a bad day they’s play some loud horrible grunge music. However, as their mood got better they would begin to change what they wanted to listen to and often a nice Beatles album would get the nod. If you can see where this is going then maybe you might agree that what a DJ plays to his audience influences the way his audience feels. If you don’t think there’s anything in what I am saying then I suggest you might care to ask the supermarkets etc rethink their music strategies. I am being slightly facetious because it is a huge area of psychology and one I feel needs more research.

Here’s some more info on Green Tea…

1) Healthy Teeth and Gums

In a 2009 study, scientists sized up the periodontal health of 940 men and found that those who drank green tea on a regular basis had healthier gums than participants who skimped on the drink.Past research also indicates that drinking green tea may help you avoid tooth erosion.

2) Stroke Prevention

Another 2009 study suggests that drinking green tea each day can significantly slash your risk of stroke (the third leading cause of death in the United States). In reviewing nine studies on a total of nearly 195,000 people, researchers found that three daily cups of tea reduced stroke risk by 21%.

3) Better Brain Power

Gulping green tea could preserve your brain power as you age, according to a 2006 study. The study’s authors looked at tea consumption among 1,003 Japanese people (ages 70 and up), finding that those who drank the most green tea were the least likely to show signs of weakened brain function.  Source

Today’s Podcast is a great journey with the story of the day’s music down the tunnel of time to light up your ears…..and there are some very interesting stories about the music of the day.  1963 The Beatles played at the Cavern Club at lunchtime and in the evening played at the Majestic Ballroom, Birkenhead. At the Majestic, every ticket had been sold in advance, leaving 500 disappointed fans waiting outside.

It’s been pouring down most of the night and we do need the rain. The whole of Spain has been suffering a change in the weather with heavy falls of snow in many places.

For a change I enjoyed the TV last night. There was a brilliant documentary with Michael Portillo, ex Tory Minister, who was looking around England using the railways. He would stop off at various points to do some very interesting interviews. It was a nice change from people cackling like hyenas or trying to win pots of money answering very silly questions. Having said that I also watched the Chase which is always an excellent quiz game where  the contestants need to work for their rewards.

Later, and good for me, there was another travelogue cum documentary this time on Cornwall. As I lived in the county for 18 years I found the programme very interesting. The views of any show from Cornwall are likely to be stunning and tonight was no exception. There were several aspects of Cornish life that I did like a lot and these were well illustrated during the show.

It’s grey today and I am still feeling very sad about the sinking of the cruise ship and the terrible experiences for the people involved. It might be cold for me here today but it is nothing compare to what those poor people have suffered.

Useful Work Culture

Never walk down the hall without a document in your hands.

People with documents in their hands look like hardworking
employees heading for important meetings.

People with nothing in their hands look like they’re heading
for the cafeteria.

People with a newspaper in their hands look like they’re
heading for the bathroom.

Above all, make sure you carry loads of stuff home with you
at night, thus generating the false impression that you work
longer hours than you do.

Every year Palm Trees throughout the Costa Blanca are attacked by its arch enemy the dreaded ‘Rhynchophorus ferrugineus,’ better known as red palm weevil. Torrevieja’s City Council has started pruning the thousands of palm trees around the town, which in total amount to around 3,800.

Torrevieja’s Councillor of Parks and Gardens, Carmen Gómez Candel said “we are following the guidelines set by the Ministry of Agriculture as mandatory sanitary measures to control and eradicate the plagues of weevils.

These regulations require corporations to ensure that local palm pruning takes place in January or February. In the case of the ‘genus Phoenix’ it is recommended that pruning is limited and to only cleaning the dried leaves.

After pruning, in addition to pesticide treatments it’s recommended that the area of operation is also cleaned. Although a similar operation took place during the summer by City Councils, the legislation encourages all individuals and communities of owners who have palm trees to also have them pruned.

The red palm weevil, is relatively large, between two and five centimetres long and usually a rusty red colour. Its larvae can excavate holes up to a metre long in the trunk of palm trees, thereby weakening and eventually killing the Palm. As a result, the beetle is considered a major pest of palm plantations, including the coconut palm, date palm and oil palm.

Originally from tropical Asia, the red palm weevil was first recorded in Spain in 1994 and is difficult to detect before the damage is down, resulting the Palm tree being cut down and removed.

Piano Tuner

The doorbell rang and the lady of the house discovered a
workman, complete with tool chest, on the front porch.

“Madam,” he announced, “I’m the piano tuner.”

The lady exclaimed, “Why, I didn’t send for a piano tuner.”

The man replied, “I know you didn’t, but your neighbors
did.”

Spanish tourism received a welcome boost last week with UK travel agents reporting a rise in interest and bookings to the country.

The news came when on Friday the Post Office revealed evidence that resort prices have crashed by as much as 40% compared to 5 years ago. That, combined with political unrest in some other popular tourist destinations and the fact that the pound is at a 2 year high against the euro has once again made Spain an affordable and favourite option.

The annual survey conducted by the Post Office measured the prices of 8 items in resorts across 33 destinations around the world. Those items included a cup of coffee in a bar or café; a bottle of local beer; a 1.5 litre bottle of water from a supermarket; a can of Coca-Cola; a three course evening meal for two adults; sunscreen; insect repellent and a pack of cigarettes. The results of the survey showed that Spain came out the second cheapest with an average price of £37.72 for the 8 items. It was topped only by Sri Lanka offering the best value at £27.95.

With people looking for a cheap way to enjoy fun in the sun and the Post Office currently offering a currency rate of 1.165€ to the pound (prices correct as of Friday 13th Jan.) it is thought a new wave of visitors will be enjoying the delights of Spain this year with the firm’s Holiday Money Report concluding: ‘Resort prices in the Costa del Sol are now 40% lower than 5 years ago, when we conducted the first price barometer. The cheaper cost of travel to Spain will make it a compelling choice for bargain hunters. So does the rising value of the UK pound – up 6.4% against the euro in the past three months.’

Turkey has in recent years been a serious rival to Spain’s top status for bargain breaks but this year it proved to be 60% more expensive than Spain. This year, Turkey was17th in terms of the cheapest option according to the Post Office survey.

At the other end of the scale the survey showed Australia to be the most expensive country for the 8 items at a staggering £115.69, together with Barbados, Singapore and New Zealand. The biggest rises were recorded in Kenya, where the basket was 52% more expensive than last year and Portugal, where the increase was 39%.
